Today is National Potato Chip Day. Yes, its true. For those of you who love the crunchy, salty, delectable tasty tater, this is YOUR day! In honor of the super snacking spud, I did a bit of russet research and found out the following:
In 1853, a chef employed at a fancy Saratoga Springs, New York resort was making french fries. Apparently, one dinner guest found the fries too thick and sent them back to the kitchen. This infuriated the chef, so he decided to “get even” by slicing ultra-thin potatoes, frying them extra crispy so that his dinner guest would be unable to eat them with a fork. Well, the chef’s plan backfired because the guest loved the potatoes! Overnight, diners started flocking to the restaurant to request the potato chips, known as “Saratoga Chips.”
In order to celebrate the spud snacks, I contacted several potato chip companies to test out their chips. Kettle Brand and Golden Flake provided me with samples to try out for purposes of this taste test. In addition, I added a few other potato chips to the lot to make for a fun and tasty tater test party! I asked 6 other family members to try the chips, so we had a range of ages from 4 through 92 who offered their opinions on this one.
Here were the contenders:
Kettle Brand’s Loaded Baked Potato*
Golden Flake Dill Pickle Thin & Crispy*
Golden Flake Honey Barbeque Thin & Crispy*
Golden Flake HOT Thin & Crispy*
Golden Flake Sweet Heat Thin & Crispy*
Lant Kettle Chips
Lay’s Barbeque Chips
Ruffles Plain Chips
Lay’s Classic Chips
Terra Blue Chips
WINNERS:
1) Best Overall Potato Chip
Golden Flake Dill Pickle This one received the most votes. Comments included: It was crispy and had the perfect amount of dill. Excellent accompaniment to sandwiches or burgers. Awesome-could eat the entire bag in one sitting! To learn more about Golden Flake or to order these great chips, visit them online at http://www.goldenflake.com/
2) Kid’s Award for Best Potato Chip
Golden Flake Honey Barbeque This one received several votes and was the children’s #1 choice, taking home the Kid’s Award. It was more sweet than spicy and it definitely grew on me. I found myself reaching for this one over and over again. Other comments included: great for a picnic; unique and different from the usual and YUM!
3) Best Unique Chip
Kettle’s Loaded Baked Potato This one received the most votes for the most unique chip. This chip features exactly what you would expect to find on your loaded baked potato if ordered at the best steakhouse around: sour cream, cheddar cheese, chives and bacon! And the bacon is actually a vegetarian flavor, too. They have a smoky taste to them and we all really liked them. To learn more about Kettle Brand Chips or order from their online store, visit them online at http://www.kettlebrand.com/
4) Best Plain Potato Chip
Lay’s Classic Despite the greasiness of these chips, everyone agreed that they were the best of the plain ones we sampled. The other ones were too salty or too un-potato-like! Also, for those of us in our 30’s, these were “classic” chips that brought us back to our teenage years!
WIN IT!

I love all kinds of chips. If I am using a dip I like a sturdier kind, usually plain Ruffles or any kind of sturdy chip.
If I am just eating chips by themselves I will pick up a couple of different bags just to try them out. I usually go for barbeque and any other kind of different flavor.
